Phonics and Reading
At Manor Green Primary Academy we believe that reading is the most important thing your child will learn to do. We have a Trust wide target that EVERY child will be a reader by the end of KS1 #ECR7. The systematic teaching of phonics throughout EYFS and KS1 has a high priority. At Manor Green we follow Bug Club phonics, which offers a fully resourced systematic synthetic phonics programme based on a proven progression that matches the National Curriculum and Early Learning Goals. It combines a comprehensive teaching program and fully decodable print books with an online reading world which includes eBooks, interactive assessments and games.

How is Bug Club taught?
All children stay with their class for a main phonics session, each afternoon any children who require ‘extra’ will take part in an afternoon intervention to enable them to keep up.
When teaching and using phonics we use pure sounds, ‘s’ not ‘suh’, ‘p’ not ‘puh’, (here is a link to support the pronunciation of pure sounds).
We start teaching phase 1 phonics in our Nursery class and as children progress into our Reception they learn how to ‘read’ the (phonemes) sounds in words and how the sounds can be written down (graphemes).
Single letter sounds will be introduced in Reception and once your child is able to segment and blend words; they will begin to bring reading books home. Children will bring home a fully decodable reading book to support them on their reading journey, this book will support your child in practicing and embedding the skills that they have learnt in school. The book will be matched to their phonic ability and will be monitored by the class teacher to ensure that they are reading books at an appropriate level. It is important to read these books more than once to help your child build up their segmenting and blending skills, their fluency and understanding.
